Art in Elgin County

Elgin County has an active and vibrant creative community.  Here are just a few of the local organizations involved in promoting artistic activity and appreciation. 


The St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre
Since opening in 1969, the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre has strived to encourage and promote an appreciation for and support of the visual arts in St. Thomas, Elgin County and surrounding area. This is accomplished primarily via focus in three areas: preservation of a permanent collection consisting of over 1,000 works; 16 exhibitions annually that fea¬ture the work of regional, national and international artists, and ongoing education programs for both adults and children. Open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am – 4pm; Thursdays & Fridays 10am – 9pm; Saturdays 12pm – 4pm.

St. Thomas-Elgin Artists’ Guild
The St. Thomas Elgin Artists’ Guild was founded in 2007 to foster the growth of art within the guild and community.  Among the group’s objectives are to share in the development and appreciation of original / fine art and to increase public awareness of  art in Elgin County.  The guild’s signature show each year is “T’was The Art Before Christmas” in November. Meetings are held the third Monday of each month, March through December at the St. Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre in St. Thomas.

Port Stanley Artists’ Guild
The diverse and dynamic members of the Port Stanley Artists’ Guild strive to enhance the visual arts in Port Stanley. They share in the development and appreciation of original fine arts, both within the Guild and within the community.  The Guild maintains a membership of 50 artists working in a variety of mediums. They hold a show and sale in June each year. This year’s show on June 10th, 11th and 12th was  their 21st annual.

St. Thomas Photographic Guild
Membership includes those just discovering the joys of photography to those who have worked as professional photographers. They welcome anyone interested in photography who might like to join their group to attend a meeting. The Guild meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, October through May, at 7:30 pm in the conference room on the lower level of the St. Thomas Public Library. Some members also meet on the 1st and/or 3rd Tuesday of each month to discuss digital photography.

Canvas and Quill Studios

Canvas and Quill was founded in 2010 to foster and support the development of art, photography and literary programs for the enhancement of the cultural community throughout Elgin County. Their goal is to develop a series of satellite studios throughout the region to provide a comprehensive program, enabling members to develop their interests and skills in the arts.

Romantic Designs Artist Studio
After years of working from home, artists Sharon & Daniel Brassard realized their business needed a new home. They opened Romantic Designs Artist Studio in the historic Alma Station, St. Thomas, in December 2009. They have also committed a great deal of time (and enthusiasm) into the organization and promotion of  "The Artisan Village" at the Iron Horse Festival.
